Six-axis radar charting fundamental human needs — find where deficiency creates drive and where fulfillment creates peace.
The Core Needs Radar reveals the precise motivational fuel driving a client's behaviors, decisions, and emotional reactions. Every behavior — however destructive or confusing — is an attempt to meet one or more core needs. The gangster seeking respect is attempting to meet Significance. The workaholic ignoring health is attempting to meet Certainty. The serial entrepreneur is attempting to meet Variety and Growth simultaneously. By mapping need fulfillment levels across all six axes simultaneously, coaches identify both deficit needs (driving compensatory behaviors) and abundant needs (potential strengths).
Pioneers of Strategic Intervention & Human Needs Psychology
Tony Robbins synthesized his six-needs model from Maslow's hierarchy, Alfred Adler's motivational theory, and his own clinical coaching work. Manfred Max-Neef's parallel work identified fundamental human needs as universal and non-hierarchical — providing a systemic understanding of needs satisfaction and poverty.

“Drivers of Human Conduct: Every human behavior is a vehicle attempting to fulfill one of the six fundamental core needs.”
The Core Needs Radar model provides a structured cognitive scaffold for clients to externalize internal dialogue, separate objective observations from emotional interpretations, and discover actionable pathways forward.
No human behavior is random or irrational when viewed through the lens of need fulfillment. Every action, however counterproductive, is attempting to meet one or more core needs.
The most common source of relationship and career friction: Significance needs (standing out, being special) and Connection needs (belonging, being accepted) are in natural tension — serving one often threatens the other.
The goal is not to eliminate needs — they are biological imperatives — but to identify higher-quality vehicles for meeting them (e.g., replacing approval-seeking through overwork with approval through authentic mastery).
Every dimension of Core Needs Radar is calibrated for direct coaching facilitation. Below is how the interactive model breaks down for client delivery:
core_needs_radarFacilitating Core Needs Radar effectively requires more than sending a blank canvas. Follow this structured 4-phase coaching arc:
Rate each of the six needs on both dimensions: (a) How important is this need to me? and (b) How well is it currently being met in my life? (0-10 scales)
Identify the needs with the largest gap between importance and current fulfillment. These are the motivational vacuum driving compensatory or destructive behaviors.
Connect the presenting coaching challenge to its underlying need driver: 'Your workaholism is your current vehicle for meeting Significance. What happens if that vehicle breaks down?'
Co-design new, higher-quality pathways for meeting the unmet need that are sustainable, values-aligned, and relationship-enhancing rather than depleting.

Never shame the need; upgrade the vehicle for meeting it.
Needs are non-negotiable biological imperatives. Shaming someone for needing Significance or Variety is futile. The coaching intervention is always: identify the need, validate it, and design a higher-quality fulfillment pathway.
The Pitfall: Implying that Growth and Contribution are 'higher' and therefore 'better' needs than Certainty or Significance, shaming clients whose radar weights security or recognition.
The Pitfall: Treating needs as purely individual when cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic factors profoundly shape which needs feel safe to prioritize.
Client Profile: Carlos, 39, Founder of 6 Startups (4 of Which He Abandoned at 18 Months)
Presenting Challenge: Carlos had a pattern of launching businesses with explosive enthusiasm, building impressive initial traction, then inexplicably disengaging and abandoning each venture at the 18-month mark.
Facilitation Process: The Core Needs Radar revealed: Variety at 10/10 importance (near-zero fulfillment after month 12 in the same venture), Growth at 9/10 (well-served by early-stage building), and Significance at 8/10 (well-served by launch press coverage, dying by month 18). Certainty scored 3/10 in importance — Carlos actively fled routine and predictability.
Breakthrough Realization: Carlos realized he was not a failed entrepreneur; he was a serial builder who was fundamentally a Variety/Growth driver — and that the 18-month mark represented when a startup transitions from exhilarating building to systematic operations.
Measurable Outcome: Carlos restructured his business identity: he brought in an Operator CEO at month 12 for his current venture, repositioning himself as Chief Innovation Architect focused on new product lines. He stopped abandoning companies and started building a portfolio while retaining the variety his nervous system required.
