Coaching Frameworks & Models

Project: Framework Application Portfolio

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this project, you should be able to:

  • Apply three distinct coaching frameworks in practice using CoachSheets worksheets.
  • Complete the Wheel of Life, CBT Thought Record, and Values Compass with a real or simulated client.
  • Write a structured 300-word reflective analysis for each framework, evaluating its effectiveness and limitations.
  • Build a portfolio artifact demonstrating framework competence for ICF credentialing or client marketing.

Project Overview: Framework Portfolio

This project is the capstone assessment for Module 2: Coaching Frameworks & Models. You will demonstrate your ability to apply three different frameworks in practice by completing three CoachSheets worksheets and writing a reflection on each.

The three required frameworks are:

Framework CoachSheets Worksheet Why These Three
GROW / Wheel of Life Wheel of Life Foundational awareness tool; works across all coaching niches
Cognitive Behavioral Coaching CBT Thought Record Core cognitive intervention; requires ethical precision
Values-Based Coaching Values Compass Values clarification is central to sustainable client change

Part 1: Complete the Three Worksheets

Worksheet 1: Wheel of Life (GROW Alignment)

Purpose: The Wheel of Life is a visual assessment tool that helps clients rate their satisfaction across key life domains (career, finances, health, family, relationships, personal growth, fun, physical environment). It naturally feeds into the GROW model by providing a structured Reality stage — the client can see exactly where the gaps are.

Instructions:

  1. Access the Wheel of Life worksheet in CoachSheets (Worksheets → Wheel of Life).
  2. Complete it with a real client (in-person or virtually) OR with a practice partner playing the role of a client.
  3. For each life domain, ask:
    • "What would a 10 in this area look like for you?" (Goal)
    • "Where are you now on a 0–10 scale?" (Reality)
    • "What is one small action that would move you one point higher?" (Options/Will)
  4. Save the completed worksheet and export it as a PDF for your portfolio.

Documentation to include in your portfolio:

  • The completed Wheel of Life PDF.
  • A brief note on the client context (e.g., "35-year-old professional seeking better work-life balance").
  • The top 2–3 actions the client committed to.

Worksheet 2: CBT Thought Record

Purpose: The CBT Thought Record helps clients identify automatic negative thoughts, label cognitive distortions, and practice cognitive reframing. This worksheet demonstrates your ability to apply CBC within proper ethical boundaries.

Instructions:

  1. Access the CBT Thought Record in CoachSheets (Worksheets → Cognitive Behavioral Coaching).
  2. Introduce the cognitive model to your client: "Our thoughts influence our feelings, which influence our actions."
  3. Guide the client through one specific situation from their week that triggered a negative emotional response.
  4. Complete all five columns together:
    • Situation
    • Automatic Thought
    • Cognitive Distortion(s)
    • Reframed Thought (must feel believable)
    • New Emotional Response
  5. Save and export the completed worksheet.

Important ethical note: If your client reveals thoughts or emotional patterns that suggest a clinical condition (persistent hopelessness, self-harm ideation, severe anxiety), pause the exercise. Do not complete the worksheet. Have a referral conversation. Document the boundary decision in your reflection.

Worksheet 3: Values Compass

Purpose: The Values Compass helps clients identify, prioritise, and align their core values with their daily actions. This worksheet demonstrates your ability to facilitate values-based coaching.

Instructions:

  1. Access the Values Compass worksheet in CoachSheets (Worksheets → Values-Based Coaching).
  2. Guide the client through values clarification:
    • Step 1: Identify 10 values that matter most.
    • Step 2: Narrow to the top 5 using forced-choice ranking.
    • Step 3: Rate current alignment with each value (0–10).
    • Step 4: Identify the biggest gap and one action to close it.
  3. Save and export the completed worksheet.

Part 2: Write Three Reflections (300 words each)

For each worksheet, write a structured reflection addressing all of the following:

Wheel of Life Reflection (300 words)

  1. Context: Who was the client (real or simulated)? What was their presenting concern?
  2. Process: How did you introduce the Wheel of Life? How did the client respond?
  3. Insights: What was the most surprising or valuable insight for the client?
  4. Framework connection: How did the Wheel of Life feed into a GROW coaching conversation?
  5. Challenges: What was difficult about this session? (e.g., client scores were all low; client resisted quantifying their life.)
  6. Learning: What did you learn about yourself as a coach from this exercise?

CBT Thought Record Reflection (300 words)

  1. Context: What situation did the client bring? What emotion were they experiencing?
  2. Process: How did you introduce the cognitive model? Was the client open to it, skeptical, or resistant?
  3. Distortions identified: Which cognitive distortions did you identify? Provide the specific thought and distortion label.
  4. Reframe: What was the reframed thought? How did you collaborate to arrive at it?
  5. Ethical reflection: Did you encounter any ethical boundary considerations? How did you handle them?
  6. Learning: What did you learn about the power and limitations of CBC from this exercise?

Values Compass Reflection (300 words)

  1. Context: What motivated this values exploration? Was the client feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or at a crossroads?
  2. Process: How did the forced-choice ranking go? Were there any difficult trade-offs?
  3. Insights: What values conflict emerged (if any)? How did the client react to seeing the gap between their values and their current life?
  4. Framework connection: How will this values clarity inform the next phase of coaching?
  5. Challenges: What surprised you about the process?
  6. Learning: How will values-based coaching feature in your ongoing practice?

Writing Quality Clear, professional, compelling writing. 300 words per reflection. Clear writing with minor errors. ~300 words per reflection. Writing is unclear or significantly short/long. Poor writing quality or substantial deviation from word count.

Maximum score: 20 points Passing threshold: 14 points (70%)

Submission Instructions

  1. Create a folder named Module2_Framework_Portfolio_[YourName].
  2. Include the following files:
    • wheel_of_life.pdf (or .png screenshot)
    • cbt_thought_record.pdf (or .png screenshot)
    • values_compass.pdf (or .png screenshot)
    • reflections.md — a single markdown file containing all three reflections, clearly labelled.
  3. Submit the folder to the course facilitator by the deadline provided in your program syllabus.

Alternative format (for non-CoachSheets users): If you do not have access to CoachSheets, you may use paper versions of these worksheets. Scan or photograph them clearly. Your reflections remain the same.

Extension (Optional, Extra Credit)

For an additional 5 points (maximum score 25), complete a fourth worksheet using any framework of your choice from Module 2:

  • Appreciative Inquiry: "Peak Experience" worksheet (create your own prompt: describe a time you were at your best).
  • SFBC: "Scaling & Exceptions" worksheet (create your own: scale question + exception-finding prompt).
  • Narrative Coaching: "Externalizing the Problem" worksheet (create your own: name the problem, describe its tactics, find unique outcomes).
  • Motivational Interviewing: "Decisional Balance" worksheet (create your own: pros/cons of change vs. no change).

Include a 300-word reflection using the same structure above.

Final Notes

Important

This portfolio is a demonstration of your growing coaching competence, not a performance. The goal is not to be a "perfect" coach in these sessions — it is to practice, reflect, and learn. Clients will be imperfect, worksheets will be messy, and you will make mistakes. That is the point. Reflection on those mistakes is where real growth happens.

Warning

Client confidentiality: When submitting your portfolio, use pseudonyms or initials for any clients. Do not include identifying information. If using a practice partner, confirm their consent for their worksheet data to be included in your portfolio. Ethical coaching practice extends to how you handle client data in training contexts.
