How to use SWOT in a coaching session

  1. Agree on a specific goal and timeframe, such as moving into a new career in the next six months. Ask the client what a useful outcome from this exercise would look like.
  2. Strengths and weaknesses describe internal factors: skills, experience, resources, and development areas. Internal does not mean fully within the client’s control. Treat weaknesses as needs for learning or support, never character judgments.
  3. Opportunities and threats describe external factors: market trends, openings, other people’s decisions, and constraints. Separate evidence from assumptions and explore which conditions the client can influence.
  4. Invite a few concrete observations in each quadrant. Ask for examples, notice patterns together, and let the client decide what matters most. Complete the follow-up questions before choosing an action.

Worked example: a fictional career change

Fictional example: Alex is a teacher exploring a move into learning and development within six months. These example answers are separate from your preview.

Strengths

Transferable skills in facilitation, lesson design, and explaining complex ideas; evidence from leading staff training.

Weaknesses

Limited corporate experience and no portfolio using common e-learning tools; development areas that may need time and support.

Opportunities

Local employers are advertising learning roles, and a professional network offers introductions to two training managers.

Threats

Hiring budgets may shrink, roles attract experienced applicants, and some vacancies require industry credentials.

Strength + opportunity: use facilitation experience to offer a short workshop through the professional network and gather feedback from training managers.

Weakness + threat: build one e-learning sample and ask a hiring manager which credentials actually matter before paying for a course.

Next action: by Friday, Alex will contact two training managers to request a 20-minute conversation. At the next coaching session, review what was learned and revise the plan.

Turn the SWOT into follow-up actions

  1. Pair one strength with one opportunity. What small experiment would help test the fit?
  2. Choose one development area and one external risk. What support or contingency would reduce their impact?
  3. Agree on an action, an owner, and a date. At the next session, review the evidence and update the SWOT rather than treating it as a permanent assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How is SWOT used in coaching?

It structures a conversation about a client’s goal and context. The coach asks questions and helps test assumptions; the client interprets the observations and chooses the next step.

What is the difference between weaknesses and threats?

Weaknesses are internal development areas or constraints, such as an experience gap. Threats are external risks, such as a hiring freeze. Neither is a judgment of the client’s worth.
