Values Compass for Coaching

This values compass template helps a client notice what matters and how that relates to a current decision. The ratings describe the client’s perspective at a moment in time, not a permanent personality profile or a measure of worth.

How to use Values Compass in coaching

  1. Choose a real decision or situation to explore. Ask the client what a useful outcome would be and whether the listed values fit their language and context.
  2. Use the compass prompt consistently: rate how strongly each value is pulling right now. Clarify that importance, satisfaction, and time spent are different questions; do not silently switch between them.
  3. Ask for a concrete example behind one or two ratings. Where are priorities supported by current choices, and where do work, care responsibilities, health, or resources constrain action?
  4. Explore tensions without forcing a ranking. Two important values may pull in different directions. Complete the follow-up prompt and choose one feasible experiment rather than an idealized life plan.

Worked example: a fictional coaching conversation

Fictional example: Maya is considering a promotion involving travel and wants to understand the tradeoff between growth and family time. These answers do not populate your preview.

Values pulling strongly

Growth and family both feel important; one does not cancel the other.

Evidence from daily life

Maya enjoys mentoring colleagues and values being available for a regular family commitment.

Constraint

The advertised role requires travel twice a month, but the timing is not yet clear.

Possible experiment

Ask about travel flexibility before deciding whether the promotion fits.

Next action: by Wednesday, Maya will ask the hiring manager about travel dates and remote participation. Review the actual options before choosing.

Choose a next step with your client

  1. Choose a value to express through one action this week. Keep the action specific enough to review.
  2. Identify a competing priority or constraint and decide what support or information is needed.
  3. Return to the compass when the context changes. Compare the client’s explanation, not just the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a values compass?

It is a visual prompt for exploring values and their role in a decision. In this template, clients rate how strongly listed values are pulling right now, then consider one action.

Does a low rating mean I do not care about a value?

No. A rating depends on the wording, context, and moment. Ask what it means to the client instead of treating it as a fixed judgment.
